Designer:

Danish furniture designer and factory owner Niels Koefoed created a wide range of dining room furniture in the typical Danish modern style during the mid-century era.

Named after the town in which it was located, Koefoeds Hornslet furniture factory was founded in the 1920s by Koefoed’s father, Einar Koefoed. The town of Hornslet in the late 20th century boasted three furniture manufacturers, each specializing in a different area of the design industry: fine furniture, upholstered furniture, and furniture making. Koefoed’s Hornslet was dedicated to elegant furniture, although dining chairs were Niels’ most popular designs.

In 1964, Koefoed designed the modern Eva chair, which has a backrest containing three vertical slats and was manufactured by Koefoeds in a choice of teak or rosewood. Over time, rosewood was discontinued and replaced with cherry wood. The Eva chair was part of a series of three dining chairs, the other two being the strongly organically shaped Ingrid chair (the 1960s) and the Lis chair (1961) with a ladder back. All three are believed to have been named after important women in Koefoed’s life, such as Ingrid being his daughter. The Peter Chair (1957) was probably named after his son.

In 2004, Koefoed Hornslet moved production to Thailand, which is still located today. Although some of Koefoed’s mid-century designs are produced by furniture manufacturer Casø, the original mid-century productions are sought after in the vintage market.
